NOTE: In response to the volume of email I have gotten over the years about Fort Jeff and the Dry Tortugas I have created an info page on access, travel, camping, contacts, etc... I finally installed the CIMEL at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, Florida, during Febuary 1996.

NOTE: If you would like to see additional pictures/etc. of Fort Jefferson and/or the Dry Tortugas, visit the other field assignment's web page for the CIMEL Scouting trip in May 1995 (We took the seaplane for that one) by clicking on the button.

This time I had to take a boat out to the island due to all of the equipment I had with me. Here is a picture of the Yankee Freedom. If you are interested in visiting Fort Jefferson by way of the ferry (I enjoyed it) call 800-634-0939.

I had to camp overnight at Fort Jefferson to install the CIMEL. Here is a picture of my efforts. The picture shows the CIMEL installed on top of the southwestern fort bastion during the early morning. The CIMEL is performing langley measurements for calibration purposes and for aerosol optical depth data.

The next two pictures show some more views of Fort Jefferson. The CIMEL is installed on top of the bastion in the second picture.

The final picture shows the sunrise on Febuary 10, 1996. I was told by one of the park rangers that there was a green flash that morning, but of course I was busy working on the CIMEL and missed it! I have a picture of the sunset on Febuary 9, 1996, it is the picture on the Atmospheric and Ocean Optics Main Web Page.
